On March 28, a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar, followed by a 6.4 magnitude aftershock, causing catastrophic damage. The epicenter was located near Sagaing City and Mandalay City, with tremors felt as far as Thailand, India, Bangladesh, and China.

The earthquake severely impacted the regions of Sagaing, Magway, Mandalay, Nay Pyi Taw, Bago, and Southern Shan State. A state of emergency has been declared.

More than 1,700 lives have been lost, with thousands more injured. Homes, schools, hospitals, roads, bridges, and airports have been damaged or destroyed. Electricity and communication networks are heavily disrupted.

This tragedy has worsened the suffering of more than 1.6 million internally displaced people (IDPs) already residing in these areas due to ongoing conflict.

UNHCR, together with UN agencies and humanitarian partners, is on the ground, delivering urgent aid and support to those affected.

- Protection monitoring and outreach
- Awareness sessions on:
>> Risks of explosive ordnance
>> Child protection
>> Gender-Based Violence (GBV) prevention & response
>> Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA)
>> Preventing family separation
>> Mental health & psychosocial support (MHPSS)

4) Logistics & Operations Support
- Transportation and distribution of life-saving supplies to the hardest-hit areas
