Heavy rainfall has devastated villages in northern Afghanistan since 10 May, causing floods and flash floods that have resulted at least 180 people killed, 242 injured, and 8,975 homes destroyed or damaged. Among the victims, 51 were children and 50 were women.
An undefined number of people are still missing and hundreds remain trapped in their homes beneath debris and mud. Extensive rescue and search operations are still ongoing, suggesting that the death toll could rise significantly.
Among the most affected districts are Burka and Baghlani Jadid in Baghlan Province, where 80 percent of deaths have been recorded. The main road between Kabul and northern Afghanistan has been closed. WHO and the Health Cluster also report an increase in cases of waterborne illnesses, notably diarrhea and skin infections, in regions affected by the floods.
Let's lend a helping hand together with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in contributing to the flood victims in Afghanistan.
