On 06 February 2023, Türkiye was awakened by the deadliest earthquake which affected Syria. During this cold winter, several provinces in Türkiye were caught up by this disaster. It was reported on 13 February 2023, more than 40,000 had lost their lives, homes, and infrastructure including tents and flimsy shelters in Syria were severely damaged. Families in Türkiye and Syria are in need of humanitarian assistance and lifesaving emergency supplies such as mattresses, tents, and kitchen supplies.
In support of UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, we aim to collect funds to provide relief to those whom are affected by the earthquake, especially in the refugee areas where help is limited.
The earthquakes in Syria and Türkiye have claimed 54,000 lives and caused massive destruction to an area where more than 23 million people live, including many who had been displaced either within Syria or across the border into Türkiye as refugees during 12 years of conflict.
UNHCR Representative to Syria, Sivanka Dhanapala, in some areas severely impacted by the earthquake just recently on the 2nd of March 2023.
Below is a video showcasing Latakia, one of the provinces that were severely damaged by the earthquakes. Tens of thousands of Syrian families lost their loved ones and homes. Much support is urgently needed to help people overcome their pain and losses.
Below is a video of the distribution taking place. Families have been staying here for the past two days with no mattresses, blankets and clothes. We are still in dire need of these core-relief items.
