Habib Ali al-Haddad was born in Seiwun, Hadramaut. He is a graduate from the University of Sana'a, Yemen. He has also studied in two well-known institutions of Islam in Yemen, Rubat Tarim and Darul Mustafa. He and Habib Kazim Assegaf are among the first students of Habib Umar bin Hafidh.

He was Director of Islamic Studies in Hadramaut, Yemen from 1994 till 1997. Currently, he resides in Jakarta and is the Director of Darul Mustafa, Jakarta, Indonesia.
